Simone Biles, the Olympic champion, had a message for critics who attacked her hair during the 2024 Olympics. Here’s what went down:
- Biles, fresh from winning her fifth gold medal, faced criticism for her hairstyle during the gymnastics qualification event.
- She explained on Instagram that the heat and a long bus ride without air conditioning caused her hair to frizz.
- This isn’t the first time Biles has had to defend her hair from unsolicited remarks.
- Despite the negativity, Biles and her team secured gold in the women’s all-around gymnastics final.
Simone Biles, having just won her fifth gold medal at the 2024 Summer Games, addressed critics who commented on her knotted hairstyle during Sunday’s qualification event in women’s artistic gymnastics.
In an Instagram Story, Biles explained how her hair was styled before she participated in the Paris Olympics, but the hot weather and a 45-minute bus ride without air conditioning made her hair frizz.
Biles shared a photo of herself on the bus, holding a handheld fan and trying to stay cool amidst the heat and packed crowd.
Emphasising her point, Biles said, “Gonna hold your hand when I say this 💋 next time you wanna comment on a black girls hair. JUST DON’T.”
This isn’t a new experience for Biles, as she also discussed in her documentary “Simone Biles: Rising” how negative comments about her appearance have affected her over the years.
She faced similar criticism for her hairstyle at her wedding to NFL safety Jonathan Owens but explained that the Texas heat made her sweat, affecting her hairdo.
Despite these harsh comments, Biles remained focused and helped Team USA win the gold medal in the women’s all-around gymnastics final.
Simone Biles shut down her hair critics and continued to shine at the Olympics, securing another gold for Team USA.
