During their conversation, Rachael told Matt that if, after four years, he wasn’t feeling ready to take their relationship forward, then perhaps they weren’t meant to be. She stressed that they both knew each other better than anyone else, and by now, they should know whether they saw a future together.
A few days before their split, Matt had been expressing how lucky he was to have Rachael as a partner. He admired her qualities and appreciated not having to put up with issues he saw in other relationships. However, a minor argument in Tokyo about a disappointing dinner choice led to an emotional response from Rachael, which Matt questioned.
Rachael was taken aback by Matt’s decision to end things, especially since he told her just days before how perfect she was. Yet, Matt felt it was better to part ways than to risk resentment in the future. He believed she deserved someone who could fully commit to her.
