Kevan Staples, an influential figure in the alternative rock scene, left us recently at the age of 74. His bandmate Carole Pope took to Instagram to share the news, declaring him a ‘bright light that will burn forever’. Though the cause of death was not disclosed, his impact on music is clear.

Rough Trade, the band he co-founded, was not just any band; they were trailblazers. Known for opening for David Bowie on his 1983 tour, they captivated audiences with their daring lyrics and electric performances. Their music boldly explored themes of sexuality, gaining a devoted following from the LGBTQ+ and arts communities.

Staples co-wrote hits like ‘High School Confidential’, along with ‘Birds of a Feather’ and ‘All Touch’. The band’s distinctive style often highlighted topics that others shied away from. Songs like ‘Lie Back and Let Me Do Everything’ and ‘Dyke by Default’ showcased their boundary-pushing narratives.

Starting from small clubs in Toronto, Rough Trade’s journey to fame was marked by several successful albums. Their sound resonated well, leading to radio hits like ‘Weapons’, ‘Shaking the Foundations’, and ‘Crimes of Passion’.

Despite their fame, Rough Trade disbanded in 1986, facing the exhaustion from being stereotyped as a band focused only on sexual themes. Pope later remarked that their messages on politics were often overlooked.

After Rough Trade, Staples ventured into Hollywood, lending his musical talents to scoring films and TV shows. Notably, he worked on the 1978 Canadian film ‘One Night Stand’. His contributions to the cultural landscape were recognised with an induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2023.

Kevan Staples leaves behind a vibrant legacy that will inspire future generations.
