Surprise! Carrie Underwood is stepping into Katy Perry’s shoes next season on ‘American Idol.’

  • Underwood, the Season 4 winner, is returning to the show that made her a star.
  • Katy Perry announced her departure earlier this year, shocking fans.
  • Perry’s exit has paved the way for Underwood’s big return.
  • Bryan and Richie remain on the judging panel, ready to welcome Underwood.

Carrie Underwood, the beloved winner of ‘American Idol’ Season 4, is returning to the show, but this time as a judge. The country music superstar, now 41, is replacing Katy Perry on the judging panel next spring. This marks a full-circle moment for Underwood, who won the hearts of America two decades ago.

Craig Erwich from Disney Television Group shared his excitement, stating, “As a former ‘Idol’ and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television. This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie.”

Katy Perry, who has been a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for seven seasons, announced her departure in February. Perry expressed her love for ‘Idol’ during an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, saying, ‘I love ‘Idol’ so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.’ Perry is now focusing on releasing her new album, ‘143’, in September.

Perry joined the judging panel in 2018, the same year ‘American Idol’ moved from Fox to ABC. Despite her hefty $25 million salary, which was more than double that of Bryan and Richie, the trio enjoyed a harmonious working relationship. Bryan and Richie both highly praised Perry’s contributions to the show.

Luke Bryan defended Perry last year after she faced backlash for her tough judging style, saying, ‘Katy gets picked on for going out and trying to have fun making a TV show.’ Lionel Richie also supported her decision to leave, applauding her for wanting to ‘take some time and actually be an artist.’

Ryan Seacrest will continue his long-standing role as host, a position he has held since the show’s inception in 2002.

With Underwood’s return, ‘American Idol’ is set for an exciting new season.
